Elle déménagea avec sa mère et son frère en Australie en 1994. Mais en 1997, ils retournèrent en Corée suite à puis Gong Hyo Jin a commencé sa carrière de mannequin. Ses débuts en tant qu'actrice datent de 1999 avec "Momento Mori". Après avoir été acclamée par les critiques pour son rôle, elle devint une célébrité et gagna beaucoup de prix en tant que meilleur actrice dans des films à succès ou des dramas comme "Sang-doo! Let's go to school!" (2008), "Pasta" (2010), "Mater Sun" (2013)... En 2015, elle figurera au casting du drama "Producers"!

En 2010, elle a publié une collection d'essais sur l'environnement qui est devenu un bestseller. Considérée comme une icône de la mode, Gong Hyo Jin a collaboré à plusieurs reprises avec des marques de chaussures et de vêtements.
